RECTANGULAR PERMANENT MAGNET MAGNETIC CHUCKS
These magnetic chucks are manually operated and constructed with high-coercivity permanent magnets that maintain their magnetic force unchanged over time.
Permanent magnet chucks offer the following advantages:
- Low acquisition cost.
- Extreme simplicity of installation and use.
- No intrinsic heating.
- No electrical consumption.
- Their small pole pitch is especially suitable for machining small workpieces.
The use of magnetic chucks in various machining operations offers many advantages for improving productivity:
- Reduced tooling costs and machine setup time.
- Reduced loading and unloading time for parts.
- Maximum accessibility to the workpiece due to the absence of clamps or jaws.
- Greater accuracy in the flatness of the parts.
Within the Selter range of magnetic chucks, there are special types for different machining operations and machines.
FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE CLAMPING FORCE
The clamping force of a magnetic chuck depends on several factors that must be taken into account:
WORKPIECE SIZE
The clamping force depends on the relationship between the size of the workpiece and the pole pitch of the chuck. In general, we can say that for large workpieces we need a large pole pitch, and for small workpieces a finer pole pitch is more suitable. Likewise, if the thickness of the workpiece is small, a finer pole pitch is also more suitable.
WORKPIECE MATERIAL
Workpieces must be made of iron to be magnetically attracted by a magnetic chuck. Pure iron has better magnetic properties than alloy steel; therefore, increasing the alloy content decreases the clamping force.
CONTACT SURFACE CONDITIONS
The condition of the contact surfaces of both the chuck and the workpiece is also important for optimal magnetic clamping. A gap (air gap) between the workpiece and the chuck impedes the passage of magnetic flux, reducing the clamping force. Maximum clamping occurs when the surfaces are ground and clean. Dirt, protrusions, holes, or a rough surface decrease the effectiveness of magnetic clamping.
